Lenore is a skilled professional developer with a unique talent for demonstrating how theory and research can be applied in everyday teaching practice. Her contributions to webinars we sponsored to help teachers implement the College and Career Readiness Standards met those goals while also showing instructors how to incorporate creativity, humor, and critical thinking into lessons at every skill level. Her insights brought out the best in her collaborators and vastly improved the quality of our offerings.

Lenore Balliro has a solid background as an ESOL/ESL teacher and teacher educator, as a curriculum writer, with workplace ESOL/ESL and with participatory approaches to adult learning. At the Adult Literacy Resource Institute she was well respected by her colleagues and by me. She added great value to our work and to the development of our collaborative, highly productive service team. Lenore did extensive teacher training for the ALRI and wrote often -- and well -- for our several publications. She is a fine writer. I highly recommend Lenore for positions in teaching, teacher training, writing, and editing, with content in English language learning and/or health literacy.

Lenore displayed her expertise in providing technical assistance for workplace education programs that were funded by the Learn at Work Program and provided on-going technical assistance in group settings and on a case by case basis. Not only did she use creative techniques to enhance student and employer engagement, she also had the ability to work in non-traditional teaching and learning environments that required a tremendous amount of flexibility and a deep understanding of what makes workplace education programs successful. She has the unique ability to foster an environment where everyone feels comfortable and is able to communicate effectively with grant administrators, program directors, program managers, and instructors in order to ensure programs are running efficiently and effectively.

We thoroughly enjoyed the LAW Workshop that Lenore ran last Friday. Honestly, I give that training (and the last one she held) the highest possible marks. We are already sharing lessons learned with the rest of our teaching team, so it’s impact has gone beyond Learn At Work students!

Over the past 8 years I've had the joy of attending multiple workshops lead by Lenore, and each of them had a significant and lasting impact on my teaching. I have no doubt my students experience more stability, peace, and multi-sensory learning in their classroom because of one single mentor: Lenore Balliro. I'd encourage any teacher or program to take advantage of any opportunities to work with her either on an ongoing basis or for a one off webinar or workshop.

Lenore is brilliant with curriculum development. She listens and guides teachers to develop contextualized units for their setting. She helped me develop contextualized daily rituals for my workplace class that gave us structure for most of the class year, and room to be creative.

As an ESL teacher I really appreciated the opportunity to work with Lenore on curriculum development and lesson planning at the Gilbert Albert Community Center. She worked well with a diverse group of teachers and staff. Her process was respectful, participatory and culturally sensitive to everyone involved. She shared many helpful concrete suggestions that I have used repeatedly in my teaching.

Lenore is one of the most thorough, creative, and institutionally grounded professionals in adult basic education and English for Speakers of Other Languages. She has a deep knowledge of much of what's happened in the field of ESOL for the last 20 years while also having the pulse of what the latest trends and requirements are. Lenore manages to be realistic without losing her commitment to the connection, passion and humanity that are at risk of becoming endangered species amidst increasing demands on teachers and programs. As a result of participating in the hands on 2 year program "Managing Stress...," lead by Lenore, the Welcome Project has not only incorporated stress management into classroom instruction and overall programming, but secured funding to create and pilot a new and innovative Volunteer Mental Health Advocates Program. We never could have predicted the long lasting and positive impact of working together with Lenore, and couldn't be happier.
